What Is Selective Mutism?

Selective Mutism is a severe form of social anxiety, leading to an inability to speak in certain situations.

Its name is known by few, but it affects about 1% of children. This disorder renders children too anxious to speak in public, and is often mistaken for Autism, shyness or defiance. If left untreated, this condition can lead to severe lifelong social anxiety, crippling depression and other mental illnesses.
